NSA Monitoring Alleged Negligence In Death Of Chimamanda Adichie’s Son
The Nigerian Society of Anaesthetists (NSA) has said it is closely monitoring allegations of medical negligence surrounding the death of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 21-month-old son, Nkanu.
The National President of the society, Prof. Alhassan Mohammed, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Lagos.
An official statement from the family confirmed that the toddler, Nkanu Nnamdi, whom the novelist had with her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, died on January 7 after a brief illness.
The statement, issued by Omawumi Ogbe of GLG Communications, said, “The family is devastated by this profound loss, and we request that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time.”
Days after the announcement, sources close to the family alleged that medical negligence at a Lagos-based private hospital may have contributed to the child’s death.
According to the sources, Nkanu had been taken to the hospital for medical procedures ahead of a planned evacuation to the United States for further treatment before his condition deteriorated.
Speaking on the matter, Prof. Mohammed said the hospital involved is likely to carry out its own internal investigation to establish the facts.
“The hospital involved is likely to conduct its own investigation for more facts by getting oral and documented evidence,” he said.
“You know the patient will have a record, whether manual or electronic, that can be printed out there.”
He added that an independent investigative panel could also be constituted if the family decides to pursue the matter further.
“Then there may be an independent investigative panel to look further based on the allegations depending on if the mother or relatives want to take it further,” Mohammed stated.
The NSA president explained that any investigation would centre on verifying the registration status of medical personnel and facilities, compliance with approved scopes of practice, adherence to standard medical protocols, and whether negligence played a role in the incident.
He said the society is awaiting more information before making further comments on the issue.
